Following the end of the New Patriotic Party’s National Delegates Congress which saw new executives elected to steer the affairs of the party on Saturday 16th July 2022, many Presidential candidate hopefuls within the party have started lacing their boots for campaign.

Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng who has contested the sitting President, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo, on three occasions, has been tipped by many political pundits to win the Presidential primaries. It has been speculated that the Vice President, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia will also contest. The embattled former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, and Minister of Agriculture Dr. Afriyie Akoto have all revealed their resolves to contest in the Presidential primaries.

One new entrant, whose name has sent convulsive vibrations across the party is the vociferous, no-nonsense Assin Central Member of Parliament and business tycoon Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Over the weekend, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong revealed his preparations in his pursuit to be the Presidential candidate of the NPP at Ohene Gyan Sports’ Stadium even as the National Executives’ elections dragged on. He hinted: “I have thought about the presidency. I thought we should give President Akuffo Addo enough time to work; wait and come out at the appropriate time. But as soon as the President won the second term, people within the party started taking sides with factions; I was timing. I had prepared myself in secret. I have all my brand new pickups ready; just pickups for the flag bearer’s contest.  I am going to give them run for their money. After that, I am ready, I have psyched myself. I will get every constituency a pickup to run”.

This kind of preparation has never been seen in the history of any candidate vying to lead his party in Ghana.  Responding to a question posed by afropolitaonline.com as to when Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team intends to start campaign, one of his henchmen who spoke on grounds of anonymity, revealed that they are beginning their campaign now that election of national executives are over.

Though Kenn Agyapong seem to have taken the lead towards campaign, it doesn’t guarantee his outright victory. Delegates will decide based on each candidate’s message and other parameters and make their choice.
