This year’s independence celebration has been scheduled to take place in the Volta Region. The Akuffo-Addo led government resolved to depart from the decades old convention of celebrating the Independence day in Accra to take it round the various regional capitals.
The celebration which is always characterized by spectacular display of culture, military and paramilitary drills and marching of students and selected groups has always been part of our national life. However, this year’s celebration has been met with opposition. As the country reels from economic challenges, some folks have asked government to stop the celebration in order to save money. Others have even questioned the significance of the celebration.
MP for North Tongu, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has weighed into the trending arguments and has intimated on his Facebook wall :  “It gets to the turn of the Volta Region to host Independence Day. I sincerely hope that considering current debilitating economic conditions, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/Ofori-Atta government would avoid spending the staggering GHS10.4million (specifically GHS10,498,084.00) spent on our 65th in Cape Coast”.
He further hinted :”Even if government is of the view that these commemorations should go ahead in this precarious period, extreme modesty and frugality must be the watchwords”.
Ghanaians are watching as to whether government will heed the cry of the masses for the suspension of this year’s  independence celebration or go ahead with it.
