Over the years there have existed wide gaps between youngsters and their parents and their grandparents.
These gaps are not mere age differences but they also convey to a large extent, a degree of differences in ideas, ideals, knowledge and experiences.
Whereas young men and women see the elderly as colloquial in their approach to things, the elderly tend to misunderstand the viewpoints of the young as lacking knowledge and undertaking enterprises without thorough understanding. For this reason, some elderly citizens die without most of the time passing down their knowledge, insight, wisdom and experiences which could easily have guided the young so they wouldn’t fall in pits and traps.
One institution which has resolved to close the gap between the experienced and the inexperienced is PALI. This year PALI is bringing elderly statesmen, experienced industry players, renowned professors, men of the cloth and other distinguished individuals on 21st September 2022 to the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences to sit side by side with young men and women and share their thoughts on wide ranging issues.
As one Yoruba elderly chieftain said: “What the elderly sees whilst sitting, the young can climb trees and would still not be able to see”, feeds into the narrative that the elderly have a lot to offer and this inter-generational dialogue will be an experience of a life time.
Pali has hosted successful programs with great men like Professors Ofori Dankwah of the General Motors fame , Stephen Addae, corporate coach Dei Tumi, politicians Dr. Arthur Kennedy, and Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, Engineer Robert Woode, American inventor Duperon etc.
In an interview with afropolitanonline.com, PALI lead, author Frank Kumi said: “We are launching the maiden edition of intergenerational dialogue this year. It shall be repeated every year going forward. We cannot continue to miss the experiences of the elderly folks again. We have to tap into their wells of insights, knowledge and experiences before they pass”.
