Residents of Tema New Town in the Tema Metropolis in the Greater Accra region have been left with no option than to depend on water fetched from a storm drain in the community for their daily chores. The situation has come about as a result of the shut down of water supply to the community for the past three weeks which has left many households without water.

Checks from the Ghana Water Company Ltd. GWCL) by Afropolitanonline on the cause of the water shortage that has hit the community drew blank as no official was ready to comment on the situation. It is not clear whether a notice recently circulated by the GWCL to residents of some parts of Accra to prepare for interruptions in their water supply has anything to do with the situation residents of Tema New Town are going through.

Meanwhile, a number of people who spoke to this portal claim they have had to depend on bags of sachet water or water from the storm drain for their daily chores.

Nii Kpakpo Mensah, a resident of the community who spoke to this portal expressed his frustration at the situation and called the authorities at the GWCL to expedite action on restoring water supply to the community. “We have been told by some people from the GWCL that they are undertaking some repair works on their machines and that has resulted in our community being cut off from the water supply system” Nii Kpakpo states.

“Whatever the situation is, no one can live without water and so we are asking the management and workers of GWCL to expedite action on their machines to restore water supply to us” he added.

The situation at Tema New Town is clearly dehumanizing and authorities must intervene to restore water supply to the community even if through stop gap measures like supply the community water through water tankers.
