Following the election of Nana Akufo-Addo as the President of Ghana in 2017, he vowed to fight illegal mining-galamsey- with all the powers at his disposable. That notwithstanding, the situation seems to have gotten out of hands as water bodies from which the Ghana Water Company Ltd sources water for treatment and distribution have been polluted and contaminated with mercury used by the illegal miners.

On JoyNews as monitored by afropolitanonline.com, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Hon Sam Nartey George couldn’t hold himself on thursday 6th May, 2021 morning when he was discussing the issue of illegal mining –galamsey- in the country.

The outspoken MP raised a concern about the future if care is not taken: “…children will not get water to drink. Today you’re even getting trouble getting water in your pipes because of Galamsey. So I don’t care the person’s political party. If the person is NDC; if the person is a national executive of the NDC and he’s doing galamsey, arrest him and jail him. I believe that for the first time we should actually have the firing squad brought back”.

Hon Sam George then called on the president to act saying “…the buck stops with him”.

Are the hands of the president tied up in his fight against galamsey as some speculate that some functionaries of the ruling NPP are involved? Or is illegal mining, a sabotage, by some political opponents?. For now Galamsey remains the new national albatross.
