On Monday 1st  August 2022, Dr. Bawumia, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, together with the Road Minister, Amoako Atta, stormed Kumasi to commission road projects which form part of 100km Greater Kumasi Inner Roads under a Sino Hydro funding facility, which started in 2019.

Just after that event, Dr. Bawumia went to an event which had familiar faces of Party faithful within the Ashanti region. Prominent among them were Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, Regional Organizer Francis Adomako, Regional Youth Organizer Raphael Patrick Sarfo, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore Constituency Hon Nana Afriyie Ayew among others.

Regional Chairman of the Party Antwi Boasiako alias Wontumi appealed to the Party’s grass roots to support the candidacy of Dr Bawumia in the upcoming elections to elect flag bearer of the Party: “The NPP party belongs to Polling Station Executives coordinators and constituency executives. And if Polling Station Executives, Coordinators and Constituency Executives are saying they want Dr Mahamadu Bawumia as the next President of Ghana, who am I?”

Reacting to the declaration by Wontumi, former Presiding Member of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Abraham Boadi, popularly known as Opooman a staunch supporter of Alan Kyeremanteng who spoke to afropolitanonline.com blasted Chairman Wontumi for taking sides as the Regional Chairman of the Party. He hinted: “Wontumi is taking this critical moment for a joke. We don’t take him as a serious Chairman. He is not as powerful as some people think he is. Women hoot at him whenever he goes to the market place. Wontumi doesn’t respect the structures of the Party. And if someone were to disrespect him let nobody reprimand that person.  If the Secretary of the Party has advised Party Executives not to openly campaign for aspiring flag bearer why do you openly endorse a candidate?”

Opooman further stated: “I am calling on Justin Kodua General Secretary of the NPP to sanction Chairman Wontumi for openly declaring support for Dr Mahamadu Bawumia the Vice President at a public event to deter others from repeating such a behavior.

Nana Dokua a leading member of Alan Kyeremanteng’s campaign opined: “We have known his position all this while so it is not surprising. I personally do not care about him. He has lost all relevance”.

Several NPP Faithful have described Wontumi’s behavior as awkward and distasteful and have suggested he be reprimanded.
